Exumas Travel Guide

An Unforgettable Journey Through the Exuma Cays

The Exuma Cays are among the most breathtaking islands in all of the Bahamas. This chain of pristine cays stretches for nearly one hundred miles, where brilliant turquoise water, powder-soft white sand, and untouched landscapes create one of the Caribbean’s most extraordinary destinations.

In many places, these islands remain much as they have for generations. Here, you can anchor in secluded coves, stroll beaches where the only footprints are your own, and listen to little more than the gentle movement of the sea and the whisper of the trade winds. It is a place where nature sets the pace and every horizon invites another adventure.

Every charter is shaped by the weather, the tides, and your own interests. While no two voyages are exactly alike, the itinerary below offers an example of what a week exploring the Exumas can look like. Stops, activities, and timing can be tailored to your group’s needs and wishes, while weather and local conditions may also guide the journey along the way.

Odyssey’s standard Exumas itinerary departs from and returns to Legendary Marina. Alternative arrangements, including one-way itineraries and other routing options, may be available for an additional cost.

Each day brings a new anchorage, another remarkable landscape, and another unforgettable experience.

Welcome to Staniel Cay

Day 1

Your adventure begins at Staniel Cay, one of the most beloved destinations in the Exumas. Settle into island life before exploring the legendary Thunderball Grotto, a spectacular underwater cave made famous by the James Bond film Thunderball. At low tide, sunlight pours through openings in the limestone ceiling, illuminating vibrant tropical fish and crystal-clear water.

Later, cruise to nearby Big Major Cay, home of the world-famous swimming pigs. These curious island residents eagerly greet arriving boats and have become one of the Bahamas' most iconic attractions.

Visit the famous whale skeleton that rests along the beach, then hike the scenic trail to Boo Boo Hill. At the summit, visitors leave hand-painted driftwood signs that have become part of a long-standing island tradition. The panoramic views across the cays are well worth the short climb.

Day 5

Begin your day on Hawksbill Cay, where a sweeping crescent beach offers an ideal place to swim, walk the shoreline, or simply enjoy the quiet beauty of the national park.

As the tide recedes, one of the Exumas' largest sandbars emerges just offshore. Stretching across brilliant white sand and shallow turquoise water, it is an unforgettable place to explore.

Continue to nearby Shroud Cay, where winding mangrove creeks reveal another side of the Exumas. Paddle or cruise through peaceful tidal channels while sea turtles glide beneath the surface. Hidden coves and secluded beaches make this one of the most magical stops of the journey.

Day 6

Experience one of the Exumas' most unique natural attractions. Known as "The Washing Machine," this tidal current gently carries swimmers through a narrow channel, creating a natural lazy river unlike anywhere else in the Bahamas.

Depending on conditions, the surrounding reefs also provide excellent opportunities for snorkeling before another peaceful evening beneath brilliant island skies.

Day 7

Explore the fascinating plane wreck resting just offshore at Norman's Cay. Depending on the tide, portions of the aircraft emerge above the surface, allowing visitors to snorkel around the wreck or even stand beside sections of it in shallow water.

Afterward, enjoy the conveniences of Norman's Cay Marina, where provisions, fuel, and a quiet evening provide a comfortable final stop before returning south.
